They must now balance cost and operational efficiency with greater supply chain resilience. This suggests that increasing resilience will be a priority for many as they emerge from the current crisis. In most cases, increased resilience entails additional costs. But the costs of doing nothing can also be significant. Supply chain managers can follow six key strategies to build greater resilience in their networks. Strategy #1: Storage and Capacity Buffer capacity is the easiest way to increase resilience, whether it’s in the form of unused production facilities or storage in excess of safety stock requirements. The challenge is that buffers are expensive, and supply chain managers can have a hard time justifying them to the C-suite. Strategy #2: Diversifying Manufacturing Networks In response to the US-China trade war, many companies have begun to diversify their procurement or manufacturing bases. For some, that means reaching out to new suppliers outside of China or asking existing partners to supply elsewhere in Asia or countries like Mexico. Strategy #3: Multisourcing In 2011, major natural disasters in Japan and Thailand disrupted supply chains around the world and on a single source of supply. Companies have revealed their dependence. In the automotive industry, almost finished cars cannot be shipped to customers due to missing and often cheap components. Multisourcing is an obvious way to reduce this risk. A well-established example of such compatibility is the use of common vehicle platforms for different models in the automotive industry. Standardizing components across multiple products—especially those that are not visible or important to the customer—is another form of coordination. This simplifies procurement policies and creates the ability to deploy larger volumes across multiple suppliers, which in turn increases resilience. But at the same time, collaboration with strategic raw material suppliers and external service partners is also important to ensure better preparedness and robustness for the future. For companies without the scale to support their own multiple locations, strong relationships with contract manufacturers and global 3PLs can be important to diversify production and distribution across countries. Survey data shows that nearly half of supply chain organizations are either using external manufacturers or exploring ways to support product movement, with a similar proportion engaging logistics partners for this purpose.
