The Theory Of Business Enterprise – “As a matter of choice, man is an agent. …He has a taste for useful work, and a distaste for useless effort”: Thorstein Veblen’s Theory of Business Enterprise, First Edition.
First edition of Veblen’s Second Book, a seminal work in economics. Octavo, original cloth. In near mint condition. Unusual in this situation.
The Theory Of Business Enterprise
Written during the advent of the US economic boom, it analyzes the impact of corporate culture on society and the economy. Looking at the situation around him, Veblen said there was a conflict between the old economic system led by big business and the new industrial system led by engineers. Veblen claimed that business owners were guilty of focusing solely on profit, sometimes reducing production to do so. Engineers, on the other hand, understood the industrial system more and did not focus solely on profit, but instead worked towards efficiency and production for the wider society. Veblen provides interesting insights into how economics underwent dramatic changes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and many of his ideas are still relevant today. “[M]any evidence of deep and profound thought, high scholarship and assurance of breadth and vision . . . is penetrated by a gleam of incomparable satirical wit that is delightful” (Industrial and Labor Relations Review).
