But what impressed me the most were the creative ideas I got along the way. Creative industries are much more grassroots because they are dominated by more conventional cultural institutions that tend to be more common in Western countries. Given the need to generate income to achieve economic inclusion and sustainable cultural and social activity, entrepreneurship is a critical factor. At the heart of this was a “model of collectivism” where people came together to share resources and risks and create productive products and services, on a scale beyond what any one person could achieve.
A great example of this was Ruangrupa, a 2000 non-professional artist initiative organized by a group of artists in Jakarta. I work to promote ideas in the urban context of art and a wide cultural environment through exhibitions, festivals, workshops, research and publication in books, magazines and newspapers.
I caught up with Leonhard Bartolomeo, a member of the Ruangrupa collective and he outlined part of the theory of “art collectivism” in a recent interview (as reported in the Myanmar Times – full article here ).
