Overnight Summer Camps For 13 Year Olds – When a Girl Scout leaves home and embraces camp life, she makes new friends and even partners in the field.

When campers sit around a campfire, paddle a canoe, shoot a bow and arrow, or scale a natural rock face for the first time, something begins to change in them: they face their fears and gain a sense of pride, they gain new habilities. Manahawk Native Americans inhabited the area in the early 1700s, and archaeological evidence, such as a stone outcropping along the Priscilla Trail with arrowheads cut off and a fish dam (fish trap) across the Potomac River in the mouth of Peace Creek, are still present today. In the 1700s, Europeans violently drove out Native Americans, claimed Native American land as their own, and established the Colony of Virginia. In 1739, portions of the land (land grants) were sold to two wealthy white men from the colony, each of whom operated his own nearby ferry business on the Potomac River. At the time, no bridges were built across the Potomac River, so ferry companies transported people, wagons, and horses across the river via ferries.

The land was last owned by Victor and Mary Lougheed in the 1930s before it was purchased by the Arlington Girl Scout Council (predecessor to the Girl Scout Nation’s Capital). The couple purchased property outside of Locketts, Virginia for their home and Mr. Lougheed’s workshop. Victor Lougheed’s half-brother founded the noted Lockheed-Martin aerospace company, and Victor was an accomplished writer, inventor, and engineer. Five years after Victor’s untimely death in a car accident, on May 8, 1948, the widow Mary Lougheed sold the property to the Arlington Council of Girl Scouts. A month later, on June 19, 1948, the Arlington Girl Scout Camp opened, but the name did not stick. In 1949, the property was renamed Camp Potomac Woods.
