Headlines keep rolling in about the disappearance of teenage summer jobs, but do Gen Zers really want that? What do Generation Z teenagers plan to do in the coming months? We asked them…

Summer jobs for teenagers are “disappearing”. Or are teenagers not applying for existing jobs? We’ve seen announcements of both recently. Retailers, which account for about 25 percent of jobs for teenagers, are closing stores in droves, potentially taking jobs away from teens this summer, The Wall Street Journal reports. But Bloomberg reports that since the 1970s, teen employment has steadily declined from a peak of 72 percent in 1978, not because teens can’t find work, but because they aren’t looking. Instead, more and more 16-19 year olds are enrolling in summer school every year. Not only do you have to make up for failed classes, but you also have to take advanced placement courses. Remember when summer school was like a death sentence? Well, Gen Z supposedly went of their own accord. More teenagers are taking courses required for a four-year college today than in the 1980s, and AP enrollment is up nearly 40 percent from four years ago.

The 2 Best Times Of Year To Apply For Jobs (and When To Avoid)

Last summer we heard the same predictions about lower teenage summer employment, but it ended up rebounding sharply, with growth of “more than 15%, the highest since 2013”. When we asked 13-17 year olds what they did over the summer, “work” was the 4th most common answer. So what are Gen Z’s plans for the coming months? In our recent summer plans survey, we asked 13- to 17-year-olds what their plans were for the summer. Here’s what they told us about their flight:

Catching up with friends, spending time with family, and vacationing unsurprisingly topped the list of summer plans. But more than two-fifths of 13- to 17-year-olds said they planned to get a summer job, around the same number who told us they planned to “settle down”. But even as significant numbers of teens plan to take summer jobs, the teen job market remains well below historic levels. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Although some teens still have summer jobs, the percentage of teens engaged in the labor force during the summer months, which typically include July, has dropped dramatically.” In July 2016, the teen labor force participation rate was 43.2 percent. that’s up from a July high of 71.8% in 1978, a drop of nearly 30 percentage points.” Indeed, we’re seeing other signs that teenagers may be putting off their summer jobs: 3 in 10 say they plan to take classes /study/study, Almost one in five told us that they will build their sequel this summer.

But among those planning to get busy, are they sticking to the summer classics? We asked (openly) what their summer jobs are like:

What summer jobs will they work on? 13-17 years old Retail I don’t know yet Internships Any job I can find Restaurant Fast Food Camp Counselor Cashier Lifeguard Babysitter/Childcare

Easy! Jobs For 13 Year Olds: Best Secrets For How To Get Them

Despite headlines about retail jobs disappearing, retail is the job that Gen Z teenagers want the most. Together, however, restaurant and fast food jobs would take first place. As a result of the recent increase in youth employment, the restaurant industry currently employs one-third of working youth. Teenagers made up 35 percent of all restaurant workers in 2016, the highest percentage since 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Before the Great Recession began its steep downward trend, teenage participation in the restaurant industry was more than 50 percent, leading to staffing problems throughout the industry. However, it is too early to tell whether the recent job gains are a harbinger of a new trend or just a “temporary blip.”

Of course, some Gen Z teens told us they don’t know what kind of job they’ll have yet, while others say they’ll take whatever job they find — suggesting that while they plan to have a job, they may be disappointed.

The Perfect Summer Gig For Teens

Most of the summer jobs for children’s articles seem to be for teenagers and college students.

This is understandable since there are labor laws for such things (we’ll get to that later).

But before we dive in? Let’s talk about these labor laws so you understand what your child can and cannot do when it comes to work.

Fair wages, the number of hours your child can work, and job safety requirements are governed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Not only that, but if your state’s laws are stricter than the FLSA, your state’s laws will prevail.

Let me tell you, there are tons of ways for your kids to earn some extra money this summer.

Summer is the perfect time for the kids to earn some extra money – I know I always use my summer break to do this.

I can’t tell you how many teenagers and kids we’ve had odd jobs on the farm over the years… including ourselves.

Small farmers need help and can have jobs that will allow your children to earn extra money.

Some states allow door-to-door sales to children under the age of 13, especially when a parent or guardian is present.

I actually did this with Tupperware when I was a teenager. My sister is a consultant, so I sell under her. I spent two afternoons going door to door and made $75!

Plus, I can’t tell you how many lessons I’ve learned about running a business, making money, and being confident while doing it.

Summer Time Is City Rec Time

While trying to work with babies and toddlers, I learned about something called “Mommy’s Helper”. I’m curious.

It’s basically paying young children and teenagers who aren’t ready to take care of themselves to help with childcare at home and the like.

I have never experienced this, but it is very helpful for your child, because other mothers with small children want to be around all the time, but need a little rest.
