A survey of recent job-seeking graduates asked how many would choose a different major if they could, and the following chart shows the college majors they regret the most.
College majors most regret, I feel like my decision to stay in school to complete a financial planning degree (spoiler alert, finance made the list of the best college degrees) was definitely the right decision. Still, I wonder if my college experience would have been different had I known this statistic before I decided on a major. I chose the field of journalism because I had a strong interest in writing and I wanted to develop my skills and ultimately create a living writing. I was generally aware of the competitiveness of jobs and lower starting salaries, but it didn’t come to light until I was close to graduating.
The focus in many degree programs, or at least mine, is to make students the best _______ possible, whether that’s a doctor, lawyer, journalist, artist, philosopher, or engineer. College is a place where you should be able to explore your interests and find a career that makes you happy, but there should also be an emphasis on choosing a degree program that is in demand and pays well (and can “paying well” is defined differently from person to person; you need to consider not just the starting salary, but the long-term career path and growth potential). Unfortunately, the high percentage of graduates who said they would choose another major if they could do it over again indicates that they are not satisfied with their career opportunities and/or salary potential.
The higher college degrees are not surprising, based on the percentage of job seekers who said they would choose the same program again.

Degrees in computer science, engineering, nursing and finance are among the highest paying, so it makes sense that graduates with degrees in those fields of study would do it again if they had the choice.
The reality of what a choice of degree means may not hit students until after they graduate, when they begin to rely on their choice of degree to support themselves. It’s easy to overlook a bad decision when your major choice doesn’t have a significant financial impact on your life yet. If you have yet to decide on a major, or decide whether you should attend college yourself, make sure you have the earning potential and career satisfaction of every possible degree.

Today, many teachers begin their careers in education without any of the degrees listed below (although most are required to earn one at some point in their teaching career). Alternative teacher certifications are programs offered by most states to people who have not completed educational courses. If you have a bachelor’s degree that wasn’t in education, this may be a good route for you because it allows you to gain experience and credentials to start teaching much faster than going back for another master’s or bachelor’s degree in education . The most popular of these programs is Teach for America, a pathway to licensure in more than half of the states and metro areas, as well as TNTP Teaching Fellows (eight states and metro areas). More local programs include the Academy for Urban School Leadership in Chicago, the New York City Teaching Fellows, the Arkansas Teachers Corps, and the Mississippi Teachers Corps. These programs vary from state to state, and usually include a condensed course that leads to the first year of education, and eventually more courses to obtain a full license.
