Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the body. Although anyone can be diagnosed with lupus, 90% of people with the disease are women. Lupus symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening and must be treated by a doctor. Women of color are 2-3 times more likely to be diagnosed with lupus and have worse symptoms. On average, it takes nearly 6 years to be diagnosed with lupus.

There are several different types of lupus, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cutaneous lupus (such as discoid lupus erythematosus [DLE]), drug-induced lupus (DIL), and neonatal lupus.
SLE is the most common form of lupus, accounting for 70% of lupus cases. It is a systemic condition. This means that it can affect many organs and systems throughout the body. For this reason, SLE tends to be a more severe form of lupus. Symptoms can range from mild to severe.
This condition usually goes through a cycle of exacerbations and remissions. During remission, a person with lupus may not have symptoms. During an outbreak, the disease is active and a person’s symptoms return or new symptoms may appear.
Some people with SLE may have regular flare-ups. Others may only experience them every few years. However, others may experience prolonged activity.

Symptoms of DLE, a type of cutaneous lupus, only affect the skin. DLE appears as circular lesions, usually on the scalp and face, although they can also appear on other parts of the body, such as the ears.
Lesions tend to be red and may become thick and scaly. In some cases, the lesions cause scarring and discoloration of the skin. If the lesions scar the scalp, hair may not grow back in the area.
According to the Lupus Foundation of America, DLE does not affect internal organs, but about 10% of people with DLE develop SLE. However, it is possible that these individuals already had SLE and their skin symptoms led to the diagnosis of DLE.
Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus refers to skin lesions that appear on sun-exposed parts of the body. These lesions do not cause scarring, but may cause skin discoloration.
