Although China has changed its laws regarding foreign English teachers, and many once-popular online platforms are no longer hiring, there are still some great jobs available.
Countries To Make (serious) Money Teaching English
We’ve kept this article as is and included the update – many companies are trying to teach students in other markets. We’ll update this post as soon as we get more information.
Having said that, don’t panic! There are many companies you can still apply to such as BookNook, Preply, Skooli, Cambly, iTalki, Outschool, Teachable, Ef Education First, Learnlight, Skimatalk, and Profy.
In this article, I am going to list the best online English teaching jobs, how you can find a job with them and how much you can expect to earn teaching English online.

While these are the basic requirements for teaching English online, I will list some more specific requirements for each company below.
It makes sense that you should speak basic English and have a solid internet connection (if you don’t, why would students register with you?), but I don’t think having a university degree is necessary
Yes, you need TEFL certification to teach English online with high paying companies. We recommend MyTEFL because they are one of the cheapest, most legitimate certifications. Click here to get 50% off.
However, there are some great companies to consider if you don’t have your TEFL: BookNook (which teaches reading instead of English), PrePly, Cambly and SkimTalk don’t require TEFL certificates. EF Education First only requires the 40-hour TEFL, which you can get easily (and cheaply) here.
Tefl Salary: How Much Can You Make Teaching English Abroad?
In most cases, no previous experience is necessary, but it helps if you’ve worked with young children before and taken a TEFL course – it will give you a fair understanding of lesson plans and how to run a classroom.
Also, if you have a TEFL certificate, are a native English speaker, have a good internet connection, and are enthusiastic, your chances of being accepted for a job will be much higher.

You won’t become a millionaire when you teach English online, but you will earn enough money for a life of travel, or it can be a nice addition to your current income.
For many teachers, this job is coupled with other forms of income (like blogging), or at least supplemented with free housing through house-sitting or some other form of exchange.

With Preply, you set your own payment rate. Most online English teachers charge between $15-$25 per hour depending on their qualifications.
EF Education First offers $20 USD/hour, is based in the US and is available to Americans and UK citizens. You must live in the United States or the United Kingdom.
Some companies pay by the minute, while others pay by the hour. In some cases, you must commit to a specific number of hours each week, and in other cases, you have a set teaching schedule.
There is also the opportunity to earn bonuses and referral payments. Also, if a student cancels you, you will receive compensation. Some companies pay through PayPal or Payoneer, while others deposit directly into your bank account.
Living And Teaching English In Japan
Wondering which is the best company to teach English online? It depends on your eligibility, but currently the best options for US citizens and permanent residents are BookNook, Preply, Cambly, and Italki because you can work remotely and you can set the pay rate.
There are many online teaching jobs, but if you want to teach English online, you need to make sure you go with a reputable company.

My best advice when applying to teach English online is to submit your application to more than one of the companies on this list. The more positions you apply for, the more likely you are to get hired.

Magic Years is currently the top choice for ESL teachers in the USA and Canada. Established in 2017, this company is a great option for English teachers.
The platform connects teachers with Chinese students aged 4 to 12 years. Lesson planning, homework marking and talking to the student’s parents are handled by Magic Years – you’re just there to teach!

GoGoKid is a great option for teachers in Canada and the US. This relatively new company has only been around since 2018, but is quickly making a name for itself.
Teacher Pay: What Teachers Want Americans To Understand
The platform connects English teachers with Chinese children ages 3-12. You don’t have to worry about planning lessons, marking homework, or talking to parents, GoGoKid takes care of it while you focus on teaching ESL.
Each class is 25 minutes long, and you can earn up to $7-10 per class. However, there are incentives for an additional $2.50 per class, bringing the potential total to $12.50 per class or $25 USD per hour.
VIPKID is a great option for North Americans who want to teach English to children online in China. The company appeared in 2013 and has exploded ever since.
The platform connects Chinese students with teachers who help them plan lessons, get grades and talk to the parents of the children you teach. When I taught English in China, I had to do those things myself, which was definitely a disadvantage!
Thailand English Conversation Teachers

VIPKID and Qkids are both big companies and both pay their teachers well, but each has its own style. Maybe apply for both (or all of them in this article) and you’ll have a better chance of getting hired and making more money!
