The Different Types Of Relationships – Our relationships in the workplace reflect our success in achieving our goals. Self-motivated people may feel that this is not the case and that they need to push themselves and others harder to achieve their goals. The workplace is changing this mindset and defining a successful culture as the ability to achieve goals and maintain strong working relationships—the definition of teamwork. Cooperation may not always be possible or may vary depending on the nature of our working relationship.

This made me think about different relationships with other people in the workplace. I have developed a hierarchy below to illustrate my point of view, with the relationships on the left (eg neutral, separate, or cohabiting) being twins, and those on the right (eg eg, communication, cooperation or trust) are stronger. Most of the relationships I’ve been asked to support are on the left side of the continuum, in the weak or avoid zone. In some cases, working with a mediator and conflict coach can support employees on the left side to shift their relationship in the middle of the continuum for a coexistence or a more transactional relationship. Or organizations can intervene and isolate workers to ensure that individuals have a place to work. Depending on performance and expectations, avoiding interactions may not be a long-term solution. When we develop strong working relationships in a collaborative or trusting environment, it’s usually with like-minded or very loyal colleagues, making it easier and easier to work together.
