The most frequently asked question about diabetes is what is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
What Are The Two Types Of Diabetes
Anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes will tell you that while there are some similarities, there are many differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. So let’s compare the diagnosis, treatment and common symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a disease that prevents the body from properly absorbing the carbohydrates you eat, either because the pancreas does not produce insulin or because the insulin produced by the pancreas is not effective.
When the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, it is called type 1 diabetes. When the insulin produced by the pancreas is not as effective as it should be, it is called type 2 diabetes. Both types of diabetes lead to elevated levels of glucose in the bloodstream.
Fun fact: In addition to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, there are many other types of diabetes that people can be diagnosed with.
It’s important to remember that when we compare type 1 to type 2 diabetes, we’re really looking at two different diseases. Neither is worse or better than the other. They have different causes, symptoms and treatments, but ultimately they can have the same end result for the body.
Type 1 Vs. Type 2 Diabetes: Diagnosis, Treatment, And Symptoms
Other than family history, there are not many known risk factors for type 1 diabetes. You are at a much higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes if a parent or sibling has the disease. Because of this, we know that type 1 diabetes has a genetic component.
In the United States, whites are more likely to develop type 1 diabetes than African Americans or Hispanics.
If you look at the symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, you may not notice many differences. The symptoms are quite similar, but develop over a different period of time. Type 1 develops fairly quickly over weeks or a few months, and Type 2 can develop over many years.
Many people may actually have type 2 diabetes and not even know it. The only way to really know if you have diabetes or not is to get a blood test and see your doctor. That’s why an annual check-up appointment with the doctor is so important!

Fluctuating blood sugar levels can seriously affect the quality of sleep you get each night. Because of this, someone with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes or poorly treated type 1 diabetes may have poor or restless sleep.
The diagnosis of type 1 and type 2 diabetes is slightly different. Both types of diabetes are diagnosed on two consecutive tests with an HgbA1c (hemoglobin A1c) level of 6.5% or higher.
In addition to HgbA1c, a doctor will also look for the presence of autoantibodies to diagnose type 1 diabetes.
Although you are not born with diabetes, you may be born with a genetic predisposition to both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Just 4 Steps
As we’ve discussed before, the only known risk factor for type 1 diabetes is family history. Even in 2021, we don’t know exactly what causes the body’s immune system to attack the pancreas and develop type 1 diabetes.
NO! There are so many different factors that can play a role in the diagnosis of diabetes. The idea that too much sugar causes diabetes couldn’t be further from the truth. Even when looking at type 1 versus type 2 diabetes, eating too much sugar does not cause either type of diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin and self-monitoring of blood glucose. Insulin can be given either by syringe, pen or insulin pump. Many people with type 1 may also wear a continuous glucose meter.
Type 2 diabetes can be treated in different ways depending on the stage of the disease at which stage it is diagnosed:
Type 2 Diabetes Carries Greater Risk Of Ophthalmic Complications Than Type 1 Diabetes
While type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes can be reversed, there is no real cure for type 2 diabetes.

Early Diabetes Screening & Detection
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) external website, 30 million people in the United States currently have one of the three types of diabetes, and 1 in 4 don’t even know they have the disease. With these numbers, it’s inevitable that some of your employees will have either diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes.
Type 1: In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce any insulin. Normally, the body breaks down the carbohydrates you eat into blood sugar, which it uses for energy. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to transport sugar from the bloodstream into the body’s cells. In the absence of insulin, blood sugar can become too high, leading to vomiting, dehydration and acidic blood. The treatment for this type of diabetes is insulin.
Type 2: In type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin but cannot use it properly because of insulin resistance in the cells. Type 2 is usually treated with lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes insulin as the disease progresses.
Pregnancy: Gestational diabetes begins when the body is unable to produce and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, sugar cannot leave the blood and be used by cells for energy. Improper management of gestational diabetes can lead to complications for both mother and child.
