My daughter and a friend are back from two weeks as junior students in Malaga. They are sold on the fact that the program will improve their Spanish through courses, but upon arrival, all students are placed at a single Spanish level (many students have never spoken a word). Do not expect significant Spanish learning. If you are a true beginner, this would be a good program. We told EF in advance that our girls had taken two years of high school Spanish.

The girls were initially placed with a housewife mother and her 15-year-old daughter. Two days before departure, we found out by looking at the girls’ online profiles (we were not notified by anyone at EF) that, for some unknown reason, the host family had withdrawn. Instead the girls were placed with a young single woman (maybe early 30s), who was nice at the initial meeting, but had no interest in chatting or spending time with them. He ate with the girls once in the two weeks, and otherwise, he went out to the beach every evening, leaving him without support. One night he left them alone for the night, saying he had an emergency. We did not expect our 14-year-old boy to be discovered in a foreign country. EF never really accepted responsibility for the situation, in our opinion.

I was in Nice France for the summer and it was the best experience of my life. I made so many friends, experienced so many different things, became independent and became really good at French. The staff and the school were very nice, the local people are very nice and willing to speak French. EF is by far the best program and company to go on a trip with from start to finish their service was wonderful

I had the most amazing experience living the language in Malaga Spain. Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in this program…it’s a whole new world with the most incredible people! My host family was wonderful, they welcomed me as if they had known me forever and I felt like I was part of their family from day one. I had incredible support from the school and the classes were very informative. I even made friends for life! I still talk to my friends I met that summer and we Skype every week. I emerged into the culture and improved my Spanish language skills. I felt safe, comfortable and really had the summer of my life! I will never forget my summer in Spain and I am very grateful to EF for making this experience possible.

Are there other activities my daughter can participate in when she doesn’t want to do a sports activity?

Parachute games are a great classic of outdoor games. Are the colors? Is the act of creating a large mushroom filled with air? Who knows! Regardless, parachute toys are a great way to keep kids entertained for hours.

Tag games are a great tool for field staff because you can play quickly, without props or preparation. Traditionally, tag games meant that whoever was tagged was out. You can, of course, still play that way – but why bother? The best tag games give participants a way to get back into the game, or provide an alternate role until the game is over.
