What Are The Renewable Energy Resources

By | July 19, 2025

What Are The Renewable Energy Resources – Governments plan how to reduce emissions, investors scrutinize companies’ environmental performance, and consumers learn about their carbon footprint. However, regardless of the stakeholders, the production and consumption of energy from fossil fuels is one of the largest sources of emissions.

Renewable energy technologies harness solar, wind and thermal energy from the Earth’s core and convert it into useful forms of energy such as heat, electricity and fuel.

What Are The Renewable Energy Resources

The infographic above uses data from Lazard, Ember and other sources to explain everything you need to know about the five main types of renewable energy:

Ancillary Services Offered By Distributed Renewable Energy Sources

Editor’s Note: We have not included nuclear power here because, although it is often defined as a sustainable energy source, it is not technically renewable (ie, there is a finite amount of uranium).

Although often overlooked, hydropower is the largest renewable source of electricity, followed by wind and solar power.

In 2021 the five main sources together produce about 28% of global electricity, with wind and solar power breaking the 10% share barrier for the first time.

Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) is the lifetime cost of a new utility divided by total electricity. The LCOE of solar and wind is about one-fifth that of coal ($167/MWh), meaning that new solar and wind plants are now much cheaper to build and operate than new coal plants.

Differences Between Green Energy And Renewable Energy

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the five types of renewable energy and how they work.

Wind turbines use large rotor blades to capture the kinetic energy generated by the wind, installed at high altitudes both on land and at sea.

As air flows over the blade, the air pressure on one side of the blade decreases and the force pulls down.

. Due to the difference in air pressure on both sides, the blades rotate, turning the rotor.

Top 7 Renewable Energy Sources That Are Changing The World

The rotor is connected to a turbine generator, which turns the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity.

Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells consist of a layer of semiconductor, positive on one side and negative on the other, which creates an electric field. When light enters the cell, the semiconductor absorbs the sunlight and transfers the energy in the form of electrons. These electrons are captured by an electric field in the form of an electric current.

The solar system’s ability to generate electricity depends on the semiconductor material, as well as environmental conditions such as heat, dust, and shade.

Geothermal energy comes directly from the Earth’s core – the heat from the core boils the underground water known as groundwater.

Renewable Energy Lab

Geothermal plants typically use wells to pump hot water from geothermal sources and turn it into steam for a turbine generator. Extracted water and steam can be re-injected, making it a renewable energy source.

Similar to wind turbines, hydroelectric plants use a turbine generator to convert the kinetic energy of flowing water into electricity.

Hydroelectric plants are usually located near bodies of water and use diversion structures such as dams to direct the flow of water. Energy production depends on the change in volume and height or

Biomass – organic matter such as wood, dry leaves and agricultural waste – is usually burned, but it can be regenerated or replenished. Burning biomass in a boiler produces high-pressure steam that turns a turbine generator to produce electricity.

What Is The State Wise Renewable Energy Potential In India?

Biomass can also be converted into a liquid or gaseous fuel for transportation. However, emissions from biomass vary by fuel and are often higher than other clean sources.

Most countries are in the early stages of their energy transition, and only a few derive most of their electricity from clean sources. But the current decade may see more growth than recent record years.

The IEA estimates that by 2026 global renewable electricity capacity to increase by 60% from 2020 level of up to 4,800 gigawatts, which corresponds to current electricity generation from fossil fuels and nuclear fusion. So regardless of when renewable energy takes over, it’s clear that the global energy economy will continue to change.

In the last few decades, much attention has been paid to renewable energy. This is partly due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the increasing demand for energy due to a growing world population. This paper attempts to understand what scientists are doing in remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) to explore renewable energy sources for a more sustainable future. A lot of research related to renewable energy sources. This paper examines geothermal energy, wind energy, hydropower, biomass and solar energy. This review paper focuses on exploring how remote sensing and GIS-based methods are useful in finding optimal renewable energy sites. The paper also presents a number of case studies from various countries around the world that use such methods to investigate different types of renewable energy sites. Although each remote sensing and GIS technology used for renewable energy exploration may seem to be effectively marketed as the most efficient among the others, remember that in reality, a combination of different methods is more effective. work The article examines several issues related to the use of remote sensing and GIS for renewable energy from current and future perspectives and suggests possible solutions. The authors believe that the conclusions and recommendations drawn from the case studies and the literature reviewed in this study will be valuable to renewable energy researchers and policy makers.

Major Types Of Renewable Energy Resources

Renewable energy sources based on fossil fuels such as coal, oil, natural gas, and fuel wood are widely used in electricity generation, transportation, home heating, and other manufacturing industries. However, renewable energy sources are depleting due to the increasing energy demand due to the increasing population [1, 2, 3]. With the increasing recognition and consensus of the global community regarding the threat of climate change, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels has been focused on in recent years [4]. Hence, it is necessary to look for alternative sources of energy, because energy is always needed. The share of renewable energy sources in electricity production, heating systems and transport in cities has increased significantly [5]. This article focuses on five types of renewable energy sources. geothermal, wind, biomass, water and solar energy (Figure 1).

Geothermal energy is considered an environmentally friendly alternative. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources, climate change is unlikely to have a major negative impact on the reliability of geothermal energy, but the widespread use of geothermal energy will play a significant role. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions [6]. In addition, modern reservoir management techniques combined with natural continuous heat exchange from earth processes ensure that such geothermal systems can be used sustainably. Geothermal energy is physically generated from the heat of decay of radioactive isotopes naturally present in the Earth. This internal thermal combustion is estimated to generate all the thermal energy at depth
