This 30-year-old outdoor adventure camp company offers dozens of summer day and overnight options in Maryland and Virginia for ages 4 to 16 – including “trial” weeks for those still testing the adventure sports waters. More focused sessions include a kayaking day camp for ages 9 to 15 in McLean ($750), a Poolesville-based rafting day camp (overnight) for ages 9 to 15 ($750), as well as fishing and camping mountain biking, among others. The organization also offers travel camps where kids travel from local meeting places to neighboring states – even Canada – for overnight experiences in kayaking, rock climbing and more.

In addition to traditional camp and mini-camps, those who have completed grades seven through ten can improve their water sports skills at YMCA Camp Tockwough’s weeklong specialty camps in Worton, Maryland ($1,600), about two hours from DC. Certified lifeguards – most of whom, according to the website, have collegiate and international water sports experience – teach water skiing, sailing and wakeboarding.

Capital SUP’s five-day “Grom” camps in Annapolis teach standup paddleboarding (including water safety) to ages 7 to 14 in full- and half-day sessions. Check website for 2023 prices.

Directly across the street from Camp Tockwogh in Worton, Maryland, this camp hosts children ages 7 to 16 on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The camp’s main offering is a two-week general session ($3,550), but Echo Hill also has a one-week “Sail, Ski, Fish, Crab Camp” that focuses specifically on these water activities ($1,700).

Ages 5 to 15, learn horsemanship and general horsemanship—with at least one hour of riding and one hour of off-horse instruction per day—plus crafts, archery, photography, water games and more at this full-day, weeklong riding camp ($630) in Centreville.

Campers can “say goodbye to the training wheels” in this learn-to-bike program for ages 4 to 11, or improve their skills with a few different adventure camps for ages 5 to 12. Camps run weekly and are held at different locations, including Georgetown Day School in DC, St. Martin in Annapolis and Kinder Farm Park in Millersville.

The organization that owns East Potomac Golf Links, Langston Golf Course and Rock Creek Park Golf Course offers summer camps. Details for 2023 have not been announced, but last year kids between the ages of 5 and 15 could practice their skills with weekly beginner (half-day, $299) and intermediate (full-day, $499) sessions.

A five-day camp on the Potomac River ($695) is suitable for 12- to 17-year-olds who want to learn or improve their kayaking skills. Beginners can sign up for Level 1 and start with the basics, but will be paddling Class II whitewater by the end of the week.

Kids 5 to 17 can find a summer sailing camp at the Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis. The younger set, 5- to 7-year-old “port smokers,” learn the basics at a half-day, weeklong camp ($400), while young sailors ages 7 to 10 can enroll in the full-day, weeklong Beginner Opti Camp ($600 $). There are also camps for beginning sailors hoping to join a high school team, as well as sessions for intermediate and more advanced sailors of all ages. Camps range from one week through the summer and cost $400 to $3,600.

10- to 16-year-olds with climbing experience can spend a week at this climbing training center’s indoor/outdoor adventure camp ($525), in either Alexandria or Sterling. Meanwhile, new climbers and younger campers have indoor opportunities to prepare for indoor/outdoor skills. Ages 6 to 14 can try a one-day camp ($110), and ages 8 to 14 can choose between a day or weeklong program ($475).
